Buying the Bling and Expecting the Belonging

Okay, seriously. Can we talk about celebrity endorsements for a minute? Because, and maybe I’m just old-school or perpetually confused, but buying something just because some famous person uses it feels like the universe’s greatest prank. And the fact that marketing gurus have been pulling this off for decades, successfully, boggles my mind. My tiny, middle-aged mind.

You’ve seen the reels, right? The ones claiming, “Smell exactly like Shah Rukh Khan!” And then you picture yourself, spraying on this magical elixir, strutting into a room, expecting… what exactly? For people to mistake you for the Baadshah of Bollywood?

Let’s be real. Even if that perfume does smell like SRK, who in your circle has actually smelled SRK? Unless your best friend is Gauri Khan, it’s highly unlikely. And if you’re already in that inner circle, trust me, you’re not sweating over what perfume to buy based on a celeb’s preference. You’re probably debating organic kale vs. regular kale.

And let’s say, hypothetically, your perfume does perfectly capture the essence of King Khan. What’s the end game? You want people to look at your glorious white hair, my friend, and my magnificent, ever-expanding belly, and think… Shah Rukh Khan? Come on. It’s about as likely as me winning an Olympic medal in synchronised swimming. Very, very unlikely.

I’d much rather carve out my own unique identity, you know? There’s no shortcut to that. You can buy the perfume, the watch, the fancy car… but the perception? The respect? The image? That, my friend, is not available on Amazon Prime or at your local luxury boutique. You have to earn it. Brick by painstaking brick.

It boils down to your social circle too, doesn’t it? I could buy a genuine Rolex tomorrow and walk into my usual chai adda. The first thing my friends would say, after admiring it for a nanosecond, would be, “Wah! Looks exactly like the original, yaar!” See? My personality, my entire vibe, just doesn’t align with suddenly flashing a Rolex. There’s no point trying to prove it’s real when everyone expects it to be a first copy from the local market near Charminar.

So, why chase this unattainable projection? Why buy into a fake social image when you can build a real one? My philosophy? Buy products based on recommendations from people you actually know. Your cousin who swears by a certain brand of pressure cooker, or your college buddy who vouches for a specific laptop. Those are the endorsements that make sense. They’re from your planet.

Because in the end, smelling like Shah Rukh Khan might get you a few curious sniffs, but being your authentic self? That’s what leaves a lasting, truly unforgettable impression. And trust me, it smells way better.
