Friday, 10th October.
After working on a new jingle for a while, I came down stairs to have a cup of tea at the small tea stall near my office building. I was having my tea, lost in my own thoughts, wondering how 2 years had already passed since I joined Fever 104 FM (and hence, shifted to Bangalore). It had been (and still is) a wonderful experience.
Suddenly, my eyes fell on something I had never noticed in the past 2 years of my existence in the company. A small postbox hanging on a tree! I had never seen anybody using it ever. Except for this one instance, where I saw a young man, smoking his worries away while sipping his cup of coffee and using this postbox as a handy coffee table....
There was once a time when the only way of written communication was through post. Electronic communication was limited to a telegram (I wonder how many use it these days). The friendly postman in a trademark khakhi uniform was probably as close as a family member in many households. He would, in his service, see the children in the household grow up, get married and get settled happily elsewhere...
With the advent of technology, the once ubiquitous inland letter got replaced by the email... and the cheap 25 paise post card got replaced by an SMS.
Personally, I feel very fortunate to have been part of a developing country rather than a so called ‘developed country'. This way, at least I can be a first hand witness to the developments. I can live to tell the tale!
Over the years, I have seen a lot of things change.
- I lived in a time when buying a TV meant that you had 2 varieties to choose from - Black and White or a Colour TV.
- I lived in a time when the colour television came in 2 models - with Remote and without Remote.
- I lived in a time when one had to wait for at least 4 years to finally get a home telephone (landline) after applying for it.
- I lived in a time when TVs with a capacity of more than 12 channels were virtually unheard of.
- I lived in a time when a hard disk, was only a term students read about in their computer classes.
- I lived in a time when a 5 ¼ inch floppy disk (512 KB) was enough to store the entire operating system.
It is amazing how things have changed over the years......
Humm.... coming back to my senses, I started going back to my studio...
Presently, I was now back in the lift to reach the 3rd floor of my office building. The coffee break was over and I was going back into the studio to finish the jingle.
( Incase you are wondering, I just turned 28 last week....!!)
